Eastern Illinois University lost to Tennessee Tech on April 2, with a final score of 21-6. The Panthers now hold a record of 15-11 overall and 5-2 in the Ohio Valley Conference, while the Golden Eagles improved to 10-20 overall and earned their first conference win at 1-6.
The loss marks a challenging start for Eastern Illinois at the end of their week series. Tennessee Tech’s offense dominated, collecting 21 runs on 23 hits. The Panthers used three pitchers during the game but struggled to slow down the Golden Eagles’ bats.
Tyler Conklin, typically EIU’s ace pitcher, lasted only 2.2 innings and allowed twelve earned runs on thirteen hits with two walks and one strikeout. His season record moved to five wins and two losses after this outing. Reliever Hayden Trier also pitched for EIU, giving up seven earned runs over his own 2.2 innings.
Tennessee Tech scored at least three runs in every inning except the fifth, including five runs in the second inning and six more in the sixth that helped secure a run-rule victory. Despite these pitching difficulties, Eastern Illinois started strong offensively by scoring four runs in the first inning. Joey Hagen contributed significantly with a triple and four RBIs while Mike O’Conor went three-for-three with an RBI.
Brett Stanley extended his hitting streak to twenty-three games—the longest for an EIU player since 1991—by recording one hit during the contest. The Panthers added single runs in both the fifth and sixth innings but could not close the gap further due to leaving ten runners stranded on base throughout.
Looking ahead, Eastern Illinois will continue its weekend Ohio Valley Conference series against Tennessee Tech on Friday evening.
