Arthur, Illinois, located in Douglas and Moultrie counties, is known for being home to the largest and oldest Amish community in the state. The village attracts hundreds of thousands of visitors annually who are interested in experiencing traditional Amish culture and lifestyle. Founded on September 2, 1873, when Michael H. Warren entered the plat for the original town, Arthur has maintained its motto: “You’re a stranger only once.”

The village is part of Illinois’ 101st District, represented by State Representative Chris Miller. Miller frequently visits Arthur to engage with residents.

“The community of Arthur represents values everyone can learn from, and the food is always homegrown, fresh, and clean,” said Miller. “The Amish have a way of life that is inspiring: they work hard, and they do more with less. I am proud to represent them and to highlight the many contributions they make to our region.”

Miller was elected as a Republican to the Illinois State House in 2023 for the 101st District seat, succeeding Reggie Phillips (https://ballotpedia.org/Chris_Miller_(Illinois)).

Tourism has grown significantly in Arthur over recent years. The village now offers tours led by locals that allow visitors an inside look at Amish homes where comfort meals are served alongside stories about the settlement’s history. The local Amish community has grown to approximately 4,500 members. Tours also provide information about key parts of the local economy such as farming, carpentry, and quilt making. Visitors often purchase locally made products ranging from hand-carved furniture to other unique items.

Yoder’s Kitchen is one notable destination in Arthur known for farm-to-fork meals. Owner Anna Herschberger grew up in a traditional Amish household; her mother operated Miller’s Home Cooking before her. Anna started at Yoder’s Kitchen as a waitress in 1994 before purchasing it in 2002. In response to business growth, she expanded with an addition called “The Porch” in 2016. As of 2025, Yoder’s Kitchen continues serving customers with traditional meals and baked goods.

Arthur remains situated between Indianapolis and Springfield and features visible signs of its heritage like horse-drawn buggies throughout town streets and roads. Its history continues to draw visitors seeking insight into Amish traditions.
