State Representative Adam Niemerg (R-Dieterich) recently had the opportunity to visit the NUCOR Skyline Steel plant in Newton. NUCOR is known for being the largest steel and steel products producer in the United States, as well as the largest recycler of any type of material in North America. Their commitment to recycling is impressive, with over 20 million tons of iron scrap being recycled annually to produce new steel that is 100 percent recyclable.

During his visit, Rep. Niemerg learned about the important role that NUCOR plays in the local community. The Newton facility employs 32 individuals, contributing to the 1,500 employees that NUCOR has in the state of Illinois. The plant specializes in producing rolled and welded pipe pilings that are used in the construction of skyscrapers, interstate overpasses, and bridges. In fact, NUCOR Skyline Steel of Newton has played a crucial role in the construction of many of the iconic skyscrapers and high-rise buildings along the Chicago River, including the renowned Trump Tower.

Impressed by NUCOR's contribution to the economy and their commitment to safety, Rep. Niemerg commented, "NUCOR is a prime example of how the private sector can create good-paying jobs and set industry high standards for work safety for its employees." He also highlighted the company's support for local community programs such as the Jasper County Sheriffs Association and the Family Life Centers in Effingham and Newton.

One of the key aspects that stood out to Rep. Niemerg during his visit was NUCOR's dedication to its employees. He discovered that the average NUCOR teammate stays with the company for an impressive 20 years, and the average salary nationwide is $100,000 per year. Additionally, every employee and their dependents are eligible to receive a $4,000-per-year scholarship to attend college or a trade school. This scholarship program has been running since 1974 and has awarded over $115 million to nearly 25,000 children.

During the visit, Rep. Niemerg received a warm welcome from various members of the NUCOR team, including corporate team members from Charlotte, North Carolina, and the management team at the plant. Among those who greeted him were Plant Manager Chris Himelick, Production Supervisor Kevin Dhom, Quality Supervisor Eric Pitts, Controller Brenda Schulz, State Government Affairs Director Mike Stober, and Illinois lobbyist Ed Peck.

The highlight of the visit was a hands-on experience for Rep. Niemerg, allowing him to use the machinery and make a weld. This gave him a firsthand understanding of the intricacies involved in producing the high-quality steel that NUCOR is known for.

Rep. Niemerg's visit to the NUCOR Skyline Steel plant in Newton offered valuable insights into the company's operations and its positive impact on the local community. NUCOR's commitment to job creation, safety, and employee support exemplifies the potential of the private sector to drive economic growth and uplift communities.
