Chicago Tribune columnist and journalism alumna Heidi Keibler Stevens will present a lecture on liberal arts and media careers at 6 p.m. Nov. 2 in Eastern Illinois University's Lumpkin Auditorium, 600 Lincoln Ave. in Charleston.

Called “Balancing Act,” the free talk will look at achieving work-life balance, maintaining relationships and parenting from a feminist perspective.

“She is the perfect person to talk about the value of a liberal arts education in media careers and beyond,” English Professor Robert Martinez, who organized the event, said. Martinez first took notice of Stevens’ work when she published a column earlier this year speaking highly of EIU as a regional public university, referencing her own fulfilling experience there as a student in the ‘90s.

Stevens served as editor-in-chief of the Daily Eastern News during 1995-96. She has been with the Tribune since 1998, serving as an editor in the Tribune’s entertainment department prior to covering lifestyle.

“Given her experiences and training, she is perfect to discuss the importance of humanities training for the professional world,” Martinez stated.

The journalist will also speak to various classes and meet with faculty during her visit to the campus.

The public is invited to a reception before the lecture, from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m. in Lumpkin 2031.
