Smithsonian support and spelling bee success were two of CUSD No. 20’s accomplishments revealed at the Lawrence/Crawford Counties board of education (BOE) meeting on Jan. 20 at Parkside Elementary School in Lawrenceville.

With BOE President Shane Gray presiding, principals from Parkside ES, Parkview JHS and Lawrenceville HS reported their schools’ recent activities and accomplishments. Parkside’s Julie Hayes stated that the successful back-to-school institute included a presentation on Journey’s Reading Program.

Parkview JHS Principal Jeremy Brush praised the Dec. 17 band and chorus concert and congratulated Bill Magee and Allison Mendenhall on a great performance. Sixth grader Genisis Campbell won this year’s spelling bee. Chrystal Holmes addressed the board on an upcoming Beta convention in Springfield, where 44 students would be participating.

LHS Principal Paul Higginbotham reported that Lawrenceville High School received a grant from the Smithsonian to support a project studying flooding in the local area over the past two centuries, in collaboration with Red Hill. Additionally, six Illinois State Scholars were recognized during a Feb. 2 basketball game: Cailyn Andrews, Slayton Dorney, Tyler Emmett, Kenzie Hamilton, Ainsli Hubbard and Chandler Lynch.

The board approved overnight field trips for various clubs and athletics teams, including the Parkview Beta Club, LHS Beta Club, LHS Wrestling team and LHS Choir. A bass fishing team for LHS won approval, and the school recently hosted various athletic tournaments.

The board went into executive session to discuss personnel matters. After reconvening, it was announced that Parkview JHS track boys' and girls' coaches Robert and Emily Wells had resigned; and the board had voted to hire Chelsea Buher as LHS' head softball coach.
