Tuscola is looking forward to various upcoming special events, including mud volleyball.

From Market on Main to mud volleyball, the Tuscola Tourism Board has all of its 2016 events covered following the Jan. 19 meeting at Tuscola City Hall.

The annual Market on Main figured prominently into the meeting discussion. Anna Nelson presented budget information, which was met with a positive response. Last year’s budget of approximately $5,000 was regarded as conservative and feasible. Agreeing to sponsor the market again this year, the board agreed that “it’s nice to host something on [the] festival corner, and have music there.” Nelson will contact potential sponsors and book bands.

“It’s a great opportunity for local organizations to make a little money for sponsoring the event,” board member Alta Long said.

A second planned event, Sparks in the Park, will begin 9:30 a.m. July 9. The annual event features basketball, mud volleyball, kids’ games and a parade.

When Nelson asked for input on entertainment possibilities, the board expressed interest in renting a stage with lighting as before, and perhaps booking a well-known local band to draw larger crowds. A car show by the Wheel's Car Club, an antique tractor show and live entertainment by the Hometown Band and the Community Band will all be returning this year.

Additionally, the 2016 Miss Tuscola Pageant has been scheduled for 6 p.m. March 5 at the Tuscola High School; doors will open at 5:30.
