To approve charitable and athletic group raffles, discuss drive-in procedures, arrange for the Special Olympics and commemorate Black History Month, Charleston’s City Council will gather at 6:30 p.m. today, Feb. 16, at 520 Jackson Ave.
Two groups have asked for raffle licenses for upcoming events. To raise funds for its clothing ministry and food pantry, The Standing Stone Community Center will sponsor a raffle at 6:45 p.m. on March 3 at U-Suites Hotel, 920 West Lincoln Ave.; while the Charleston Chill Softball league will hold its own Feb. 8 at Charleston Carnegie Library, to offset the cost of its national competition.
In additional business, the council will recognize February as Black History Month in Charleston with a proclamation; introduce amendments to clarify the use of drive-in establishments; renew a lease agreement with Coles County to continue Special Olympics; and tend to routine repair and maintenance matters, including real estate and water treatment.
Bills, payroll and the comptroller’s report will round out the agenda. After time is allotted for public comments, an executive session will precede adjournment. The public is reminded that while state law prohibits any actions to be taken on items not listed on the agenda, the council may respond to public input with guidance or referral to appropriate personnel.
